10 Things You Can Do To be involved in washoevalley.org 1. Send in a WV story or quip.
The county cable channel 17 has the county commissioner meetings, a news show, and various public info segments.

Washoe County Survey Click on "fill out this brief survey" The survey consists of several sections where you rank priorities. At the end of each section you can write in your views. Here's a sample of what other residents are saying in the survey:
6. Other Suggestions? Please tell us any other strategic initiatives you
think Washoe County should engage in.
(96 respondents)
"Listening" to the public would go a long way. The public feels greatly
ignored by ALL factions in planning.
-Training for staff to support public engagement. -Access to technology
through libraries, other county facilities. -Collaboration with neighboring
counties.
1) Encourage bicycle commuter friendly streets 2) Provide incentives to
developers and low-rent motel owners to help change the face of downtown
Reno. The old motels provide housing to many drug dealers and addicts which,
in turn, harvest unsafe streets/neighborhoods.
A true review of the natural resources and why the willingness to take it
away so easily.
Acquire more open space & show some backbone unlike the Ballardini Ranch
"compromise."
Actively protecting our natural resources, curbing rampant growth, requiring
solar panels on all new homes, keeping access to our public lands
Actually listen to the people. Represent the best interests of the citizens.
Don`t make private deals with developers.
Agressive pursiut of Open Space, better land-use - it`s a CRIME that the
western suburbs do not include convenient easements to the National Forest
land.
bringing a new pool facility down to south valley...expand where you have
already started at the fields and library location...now
clean the streets in lemon valley. I had my street cleaned only ONCE last
year. More is needed
colaborate more efficiently with other government agencies when implementing
these strategies.
Collaboration with State and Non Profits to expand or enhance services to
youth. Special focus on abused/neglected and at risk youth who are in need
of immediate mental health services.
conserving the wildeness in the county
Control influx of undesirable individuals into our small community. No
gangs, no meth labs. Strenghthen Reno Police Department.
Create a master plan and actually stick to it. Provide parks, recreation and
family-friendly activities/areas that locals, not just tourists, will want
to use. And LIMIT GROWTH as we are running out of water and open spaces and
ruining our quality of life that we are living here for.
Do not do the annexation plan Do not give away public lands: these are owned
by ALL Support wildlife and Wilderness for the preservation of the world and
our sanity Bring back the big fish in the Truckee and Pyramid Lake; bring
back Winnemucca Dry Lake Give the native Americans here everything and every
bit of land they want; appologize as a community to them
Encourage commissioners to activly engage with their constituents. Many
CAB`s rarely see their commissioner as there is a scheduling conflict.
County Planners want to plan everything. There is no mind set to leave some
things alone. Planning administrators are eager to recreate and redefine
rural and scenic areas for tax revenue. They are redefining our community in
negative ways by `selling` psuedo-rural and commercialization. Work toward
sustained growth to maintain the integrity of this community.
Establish a regional plan that identifies growth rings rather than
leapfrogging out to the Winnemucca Ranch area
Ethical, moral, and fair workplace
Even the playing field with the Cities
Force new housing developments to build schools within first two years of
the start of their projects so schools aren`t STARTING out already
over-crowded. Also have them provide more highways from housing communities
to work districts. I-80 & 395 cannot support rush hours let alone an
evacuation plan for any catastrophe! Does our community even have an
evacuation plan?
Fund senior food programs. Put more funding into the schools, and work to
encourage better voter turn-out and public participation.
FYI: I am fourth generation Nevadian and have spent all but a few years of
my life in this state.
Get rid of grafitti-now. Need construction free roads that don`t put us out
of business. Coordinate road closures so all streets in an are are NOT
closed at the same time.
Getting the fuel prices in control. Lowering the gas tax, and syncing city
lights to limit fuel consumption. Plan less communities that take up more
water in our desert. We don`t need to grow any more, we have limited space.
Give us more than 3 minutes, for our comments and concerns. We elected you
to represent us on your promises, so try to KEEP and DO them. Remember "WE
THE PEOPLE" Thank You
Growth is out of control. Per recent newspaper articles, we will have
insufficient water to meet the demands of the population within several
years. Reno is no longer the Biggest Little City, it is becoming a Big City.
I love the signs that encourage politeness. I also loved the Big Horn Sheep
Art Project. I believe that by continueing to invest in a downtown corridor,
that not only includes the current arts and culture district, but also an
entertainment corridor, with bars and nightclubs, restaurants, and lounges
would be highly benificial to attracting tourism, as well as locals to visit
the downtown area. Also encourage local artists to set up booths at West
Street Plaza, and work with the Riverwalk Merchants Association to encourage
small business to grow and florish in downtown.
I think Commissioners should listen to what the public is saying relative to
concerns with unplanned growth and actions which will adversely affect our
public lands/open spaces. Before Commissioners worry about encouraging more
politeness and civility among the public, they should learn to be responsive
themselves to public input and voice an appreciation for the few who do
choose to offer opinions and advice. My County Commissioner (Weber) does not
represent her district`s interests and is openly catering to developers who
are willing to fund her campaign. She won`t even return email messages. What
kind of public service is that? I wish her well in her next job because it
won`t be as an elected official.
I think elected officials have to represent too large of areas, they are not
very accessible to the public. I think Reno and Sparks should add 2 new
council member seats, and the County should add an additional county
commissioner seat.
I want the Washoe County to follow planning that makes sense for the
individual home owners. I am tired of hearing about the developers having so
much power that they are pushing things through that are illegal on the
state level. The water rights of the valleys outside the areas need to be
protected against misuse to support developements that have no water supply.
We did not purchase our property in the country to have a big new
developement use our water while our wells go dry. Our vision of the valley
is rural, low traffic, adequate water, and peaceful neighbors. We did not
purchase the land to have govt. roads, city water and sewer systems, high
traffic, and high taxes. Planning is the only way to preserve the way of
life in rural areas. The grab and snatch policies active now will cause
problems for everyone. Stop and plan this where everyone wins.
If you don`t control sprawl and traffic this area will no longer hold the
appeal that it has historically held. Washoe County should create further
incentives for developers to redevelop areas in the downtown core.
if you have a 2-4=--7 year plan then stick to it. Fully explain why you are
not following a multi year plan that all regional groups had agreed to.
Improved public transportation, substance abuse treatment for youth
It is crazy for permits to be issued to allow growth in areas where it
shouldn`t be, such as in the Pembroke area recently.
I`ve got an idea, how about hiring a Director of Community Development, and
Planners that will follow the Regional Plan and Comprehensive Area Plans,
instead of working against the majority of residents in WC and selling us
out to the Cities. Look for loyalty and ethics, ethics, ethics in those
hired for these important positions. PLEASE!
keep our rural lifestyle in washoe valley
Learning logical, rational community planning. I don`t feel that
representatives and agencies in the area have training in true community
planning. Learn something and utilize it.
Limit growth and most of the problems will be solved. Commisioners are on
the take from big developers. Until they are all replaced nothing will
change.
Listen to your citizen input. Most citizens here do not participate because
they know that the commissioners DO NOT LISTEN to our input. Any requests
you have for our input is shallow and insincere. Just ask the residents of
Spanish Springs and Palomino Valley about how well Bob Larkin has listened
to them - and how he has sided with the cattle men who live outside of his
district and the power companies. Larkin is wasting tax payers money with
yet a 4rth cattle "mediation" meeting when they have made it extremely clear
what the problem is and how to resolve it. He refuses to listen to his
constituents, and continues to support illegal activities by the cattlemen.
The BoCC does not listen to the citizens!!
Look at Carson City, their City/County governments merged a long time ago
and now there is no costly duplication of services in Carson. Stop trying to
keep your own little "kingdoms". Streamline the governments of Reno and
Washoe County by consolidating. But that would mean several elected and
appointed officials would lose their tax paying jobs. So unfortunately I
doubt that governmental consolidation will ever happen, and the citizens
will just have keep paying the bill while the elected officials from Reno
and Washoe point fingers at eachother and yell, "it`s their fault!"
Maintain open spaces and wildlife habitat, more focus on the environment and
long term sustainability. Don`t develop more than we have water to support.
Make it illegal to move here. Those bums from California are ruining this
town. We are running out of water, clean air and the traffic stinks. Some of
us remember what this area was like before you started encouraging everybody
and their brother to come here. How about a fee to move here, $200,000, we
could use the money to pay for Uhauls for people who want to leave.
Make policies and decisions based on research, information, and facts and
less on political in-fighting and pressures. Curtail the anarchy and mob
rule by so-called activists who represent a small minority in numbers and
opinion.
Making the roadways and traffic better. Continue to expand road and built
highways to accommodate the heavy growth Northern Nevada is experiencing. It
is becoming a traffic nightmare!!!
MINIMUM BUILDING IN WC WITHOUT PROOF OF FLOW PROOFS ON PUC WATER APPROVAL
LETTERS BY DEVELOPERS AND TRAFFIC INCREASE FLOW STUDIES SHOULD BE DONE PAY
FOR BY DEVELOPERS BY/UNINTERESTED 3RD PARTY. OPEN SPACE IN RENO AND WC
SHOULD REMAIN IN PURPETUITY TO THE PUBLIC - DA HAS REFUSED TO STEP IN ON
"CLUSTERED DEVELOPMENTS. AND SIGN BECAUSE "ITS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE."
Move away from well and sewer services. We have to manage water, keep it
clean. We need more emphasis on wastewater management. Energey saving
development should be emphasized.
New development should pay its own way and not create an added tax burden
those here. Emphasis should be on quality of life not new growth.
No urban sprawl! (NO BOB MARSHAL PIPELINE) NO WINEMUCCA RANCH HOUSING!
Nothing on here about the Washoe County Public Lands bill that Ensign and
the Dilorettos want to shove down our throats? Nothing on here about the
billion dollars for water I read about that the developers want US to pay
for? I deeply fear for our county--this is worse than the days of Beelie
Williams. Larkin and Weber are letting the developers use our county and
public resources and thier own damn piggy bank!
Park your egos and use common sense.
Pay attention to the people. not just big campaign contributors. Stop giving
deveolpers new permits at such a fast pace. let us catch up before you
expand further. Quaility of life is important in the Truckee Meadows it
seems like bigger is better to the county government.
Please keep accountability in mind. It saddens me to see how bodies of
government within the Truckee Meadows blatantly ignore the wishes of the
people and the only accountability is to themselves (i.e. Butler Ranch). I
am grateful that the County continues to fight the good fight as in the
Ballardini Ranch and still realizes that compromise may be the only viable
solution. What a great thing it would be if that fight resonated with all
three bodies of government so thanks for your effort and please continue to
listen to the concerns of the citizens.
Please support Wilderness Designation for Virginia Mountains; Peterson
Mountains & Dogskins.
Preserve and beautify existing communities rather than sacrifice our unique
setting and environment for traffic and/or convenience items & projects.
Proceed with the purchase of both the 115 acre and the 105 acre parcels from
the Ballardini family on which you have first right of refusal. The
taxpayers paid dearly for these rights in the settlement with Evans Creek
LLC. Failure to exercise them would be a tragedy and would leave us
emptyhanded.
Promote affordable housing, transit and mixed use. Help Sun Valley develop
into a quality cutting edge mixed use, affordable and intense transit
community.
Promote effecient transportation within the region by emphasising pedestrian
and bicycle corridors and access. the new "mall" at the base of Mt Rose is
an example of limited access to resourceful forms of transportation.
Promote More Senior Affordable Housing
Promote safe healthy activities for young teens/ that help also with
community efforts. Revamp community centers like YMCA to support the
community. Improve exsisting centers with better amenities, lower cost for
all using. Adding a few new community center worked well in Las Vegas. Maybe
a few park and recreation centers equipt with park attendants. Promote
regional transportation systems, and add one bus around McCarran, would
improve so much more use..... along with resourses, traffic ect. Job
placement for homeless including a twelve step program. Involve and support
all the local churchs that help with cost efficent programs offset some of
the cost. (Like the Keep Truckee Beautiful) Praise the good, advertise
betterment. Though privately funded with
Provide more information to citizens before requesting their input on
certain measures. For example, a question on page two asks residents to rate
the importance of infill projects within city limits, but does not provide
any insight into whether or not the city has changed its focus on rapacious
expansion of those limits.
Pursue open space acquisitions in collaboration with development, not as all
or nothing acquisitions. Encourage development adjacent to primary open
space/public access points to incorporate natural resources, open space, and
access as primary focal points of the development.
Quik building when we don`t have the resources to support more growth. Take
a look at all the homes for sale, and sell them before building more. Think
about a cleaner river and downtown. Fire all the corrupt employees!!!!
Real changes need to be made so that the county regains some credibility
with the public - everything from larger signs on parcels for public
hearings (like in many communities), to commission meetings in outlying
areas of the county.
real Community Development, including jobs training and employment outreach,
housing opportuniites. Also, alternative energy should form the foundation
of our local economy.
Really, of all the gaul. How can you possibly expect a citizen with even
half a brain to respond to the previous questionaire. You might want to make
yourselves look good by concocting questions that would favor the county but
no go. While the county continues to fall over and play dead for the
developers and caves in to Reno and Mayor Bob Cashell . I have noticed that
Cashell leaves the room, county leaves the room and lo and behold when one
returns a compromise (deal) has been made Score Reno (christians) 3 County
(lions 0 ) Reno expects the citizens to nod yes on police, fire and open
space all under the guise of community centers. I am wondering if the county
will jump aboard. You then proceed to BUY Ballardini for Evans LLC, give up
on Verdi, let Reno and Sparks run over you on the Regional Plan. Quality of
life Pshaw. You should be ashamed of yourselves. strategic initiatives for
whom? Past actions demonstrate it is not for the electorlate. You make such
a point of Public comment and open law that you as a body look ridiculous.
Just review you first page of your announcements. You have made it into a
public spectacle. The county is becoming a laughing stock. Courtesy happens
to be a two way street. If you cannot conduct a meeting without threats you
had best fold up your tent and go home. look at what you did with
Ballardini. All minds were made up in a closed gathering. The vote was only
done tomak it look legal. Look into youselves and see why so many citizens
are disenchanted and say why should I bother. Perhaps we need term limits
for County Commissioners too.
Reduce expenditures so that when we get another downturn in the economy, the
county will be better able to withstand reduced sales tax revenue! The
county is again spending like there is no limit.
Regional water importation is the single most significant factor in the
continued development and economic vibrancy in the area.
Revisit branding and marketing plans within various departments to update
them and maximize the benefit they bring to those needing to use the
corresponding services.
Stop bragging about quality of life and start examining how to extricate us
from the damage that`s already been done. You appear unresponsive to people
without money or power.
Stop giving permits to developers who get rich while the public
infrastructure is overtwhelmed and destroyed. We are in a desert! There is
not enough arable land and water to support the hordes of people you are
encouraging to flood into Reno!
Stop the annexation plans for non-contiguous areas away from Reno! These
make no sense by all known planning standards!
Stop/control growth. This will solve 75% of the problems. Spend less on
schools. Make the administration and teachers responsible for doing a job
and worrying less about their retirement.
Support and strengthen the role of regional planning; look at expanding it
to go outside of just Washoe County
Support county libraries
Switch from temporary development driven economy to sustainable industries
within our water, land, qaulity of life, and population means.
Take back what belongs to the county. It seems as if everytime there is a
law suit that we give more than asked for. That is kind of like tossing the
baby out with the bath water. It is time for the county to standup and be
counted.
Taking care of mandated County business and stop trying to innovate
processes and getting involved with things that don`t fall within those
mandated parameters because you think it will play well in the public
relations realm. Too much County employee time and taxpayer dollars are
wasted on "fluff" and public relations building efforts. Stick to substance!
Stick to governance! Do the job Counties are mandated to do and you will
have succeeded in saving money and become efficient. If you do, you won`t
have to worry about public relations.
The county needs to decrease the tax burden on the citizens of Washoe
County. The gas tax should be eliminated to provide economic relief to the
citizens. No additional taxes!
The County seems remote to those of us that live in the City limits. We are
all so busy, but there needs to be a way to reach out. I like the programs
at Bartley Ranch.
The largest % of Washoe County is North of the Reno Area and one or more
paved roads should provide access with in the County Line( with connectors
to 395 & 80).
The recent construction on I80 has not improved the traffic congestion
levels. Specifically, the Nugget property should be taken through eminent
domain so that the freeway can be three lanes throughout both Reno and
Sparks.
the sprawl that is being supported in this valley is so sad to me, a long
time resident, growth? yes to a point. In my opinion this growth will impact
residents of this valley negatively and then we cannot go back and say "oops
made a mistake" lets try to not make mistake now that will leave the future
to clean up our mess. 2 issues are now constantly on my mind: 1) the tragic
loss of Ballardini ranch 2)South Virginia street being turned into "Auto
Row". What will happen to Kietzke Lane? Sorry this is so long, but I sat
down to write my commissioners and found this survey.
This area is becoming to expensive, pertaining to houses
This is not on your form: It is time and the place that our county should
look into providing our citizens a Medical Examiner.
To continue to grow we need to attract and keep families. This will require
family attractions to balance the casino dominant perception. That should be
a key priority.
Visitors to the area have told me they don`t feel safe downtown. We need to
demonstrate a NO TOLERANCE attitude toward negatives that impact the
perceptions of Reno and Washoe Cty as anything less than an idealic
environment for family values and an open arm approach to tourism.
Washoe can attract more residents and non-gambling tourists by maintaining
aesthetics. This includes infilling/upgrading existing properties, like the
conversion of the Phoenix Casino to apt housing, rather than 100%
development of open spaces within city limits. For example, the planned Cold
Springs Industrial Park on 2 square miles of open space. Urban blight is not
a selling point.
Washoe County needs to take a look at who they are? Why are they in
leadership roles? Are you there for some money in the pocket, or do you
really care about the well being of this community? Why do you issue more
water permits, when we don`t have the water? Why do you keep allowing
building, when every where you look, houses are up for sale. Why not sell
the houses on the market before building and building? Why don`t you do the
right thing for the right reasons?????That`s my question to all of city
council?
We live in such a beautiful valley. We need to be concerned how our plans
for present growth (outlying areas) will affect the future citizens of this
area.
Why was the new DA`s office built without worker parking? Now they take up
the Gallery Parking so that visitors to downtown business and river have no
place to park. Shooting oneself in the foot, isn`t it? Shame.
With all the rapid growth in our area, I am most concerned about protecting
our environment and wilderness areas for future generations.
Work on providing youth activities in addition to adding youth government
opportunities. Have a teen news letter, teen court, teen voting, teen
commissioners etc...
Work with the people, not against them. Become regional with all connecting
counties and cities. Listen and LEARN and then take action according to the
wishes of the people.
You must find a way to control development or this area will be ruined.
