Just a note to let you know that we had two groups of “Valley Girls” win at the state level at U.S. History Day. They have decided to go to the National competition in Washington DC. There is a fund raiser on April 23 at the Postal Cafe. The girls are going to wait tables and all the tips will go funding the trip. Also there is buckets at most of the store fronts on East Lake for donations. They are looking for sponsors to help finance the trip. If you have any questions please contact me at 849-0862. Local Band Gears Up For Season

“The NEW COOL RIVER BAND just had another great practice on this past Sunday up in the spectacular setting of the Virginia Highlands; – up by Virginia City and where the wild horses roam! We here in Reno – Tahoe – Virginia City and near to the wild open areas of Nevada are surrounded by something rather open, free, special and mystical…lest we forget.
The Gold Hill Hotel and Virginia City are still so representative of a time past: the Comstock in the 1800’s. – I am still amazed when I truly look around me: the Sierras, the Virginia Range, the roaming bands of wild horses, the high desert, the open terrain, etc..
After that we took our first promo pictures for our initial announcement regarding our dinner – show at The Gold Hill Hotel on May 12, 2009 – Tuesday up on the Comstock!
This flier will be posted on the Links / Tuesday at The Gold Hill Hotel site. I really hope that my family and friends will join us for a great time and a lot of happy, uplifting music!”

Help Cleanup Washoe Lake This Weekend

RGJ reports that the Back Country Horseman’s group is organizing a cleanup of Washoe Lake State Park this Sunday, March 10th followed by a pot luck lunch at the park’s group picnic area. The lake’s east shore between the boat ramps will be the focus. All those interested are encouraged to participate and “you don’t have to be a horse person” according to the organizers. Volunteers should provide their own gloves, hats and water while plastic bags will be provided.

An Idea For Artists and Equestrians Update

I’ve had a pretty good response to my post suggesting forming a group to bring western artists and period models together locally. There are two groups around and it might be a fun thing to get them together. One is western artists and photographers who need models and the other are those who love our western heritage and enjoy “dressing the part”.

I envision a loosely organized group with no dues or model fees. I suppose some sort of models release should be provided to prevent your image from being used in a million dollar car ad or something. Any ideas?

I put together a simple website for the group at http://wnahrc.wordpress.com/ where you can sign up by leaving a comment or just write the editor here at washoevalley.org. I’ll keep you posted by email and the site on the progress.

All the details have to be worked out so if you have any suggestions, ideas or comments or want to be a part of it, write in.

Super Bowl Party

The New Washoe Bar, formerly Scotty’s Bar, located at 3155 Eastlake Blvd, will host a Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 1st. There will be live pregame entertainment. Sign up at the bar to bring a pot-luck style side dish to accompany the Brat’s and Dogs supplied by the bar. There will be drink specials. Christmas Caroling on Horseback Sunday

Join the mounted Christmas Carolers Sunday, December 14th at 1 pm at 235 Pintail in New Washoe City for their 12th annual event. They will provide hot chocolate and snacks before and after the event. RGJ: The BLM will host an “Open House” public meeting today to let the public discuss the proposal to place 69 wind turbines up to 330′ tall on the ridges of the Virginia Range east of Washoe Valley. (Government agencies seem to be moving more towards open house type meeting to get away from the old question/answer/statement type format and minimize the input of individuals.-ed)

Nevada Day 2008

Had a great time over the hill in Carson City Saturday at the Nevada Day parade. Lots of marching bands, politicians, entertainment, horses, mules and burros, dogs, performers and jovial citizens who made it, once again, a totally cool slice of Americana. Nevada entered the Union in 1864 and Nevada Day has been a big deal ever since. The day also included a beard contest and single-jack drilling contest that replicates drilling an 8 inch hole in solid granite with nothing but a chisel, hammer and determination recreating what our local miners did day in and day out hundreds of feet underground to create holes for dynamite.
A good crowd turned out despite an occasional drizzle and the bars, restaurants and street vendors provided lots of good food and drink.
